Marshall Gold Discovery

This is where California was born. In 1848 gold was discovered by James W Marshall on the fork of the American River. This lead to the greatest mass migration of people to the western hemisphere during that time and lead to a spectacular growth of the west during the next few decades. In the ensuing decades this growth and discovery change the course of California history and is evident today as the State is one of the largest economy in the world.

Marshall Gold State Historic Park is California's first historic landmark
