San Francisco 49er's - California Sports Information
The San Francisco 49ers are one of the most historic teams in the NFL. They were founded in 1946 and entered the NFL in 1950. From their existence until 1969, the 49ers could not find a whole lot of success. One noteworthy event that happened during this time was the invention of the shotgun formation. In 1960, 49ers head coach Red Hickey devised a formation in which the quarterback would be snapped the ball seven yards behind the line of scrimmage. It allowed them to experience some success, but eventually teams were able to catch on and beat the system.
Finally, from 1970 to 1972, the 49ers began to show some life as a franchise. They made the playoffs all three years and fell short of the Super Bowl by one game twice during that span. From 1973 to 1980, the team had another drought without a single playoff appearance. In 1981, the beginning of a dynasty was formed.
The San Francisco 49ers were led to Super Bowl XVI in 1981 and won 26-21, after finishing with a record of 6-10 the previous year. The 49ers were led by one of the most legendary quarterbacks of all time in Joe Montana. Montana was always known for his late comebacks and was nicknamed the “Comeback Kid”. Montana was already part of one of the most historic plays in league history against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship, when he threw a game-winning touchdown pass to Dwight Clark in the back of the end zone. The play is known as “The Catch”. During his time with the 49ers, Montana completed 2,929 of 4,600 passes for 35,142 yards and 244 touchdowns.
The 49ers continued their success over the next few seasons, including a victory in Super Bowl XIX over the Miami Dolphins in 1984. In 1988, the team reached the Super Bowl again, but a quarterback controversy arose. The team was trying to decide whether or not Montana should remain their starter, or if the job should be given to Steve Young. Montana led the 49ers to victories late in the ’88 season, and won the Super Bowl along with wide receiver Jerry Rice, another historic player in 49ers history. Rice was with the 49ers from 1985 until 2000, winning three Super Bowls during his time with the team.
Montana continued his success with the San Francisco 49ers the following season in 1989 when the team destroyed the Denver Broncos 55-10 in Super Bowl XXIV. Montana was named the MVP of the Super Bowl for the third time in his career and was a perfect 4-0 in the “big game”. Injuries eventually led to Steve Young becoming the team’s starting quarterback in the following seasons. Although Young was very good, he was only able to lead the team to one Super Bowl in 1994 against the San Diego Chargers. He was amazing in that game, throwing for six touchdowns en route to a Super Bowl MVP award.
In the past decade, the San Francisco 49ers’ brightest and dullest moments came from quarterback Jeff Garcia and wide receiver Terrell Owens. While both were outstanding players and were able to lead the team to the playoffs, they were not on the same page and caused controversy on the team. Both players are no longer with the team, and the 49ers are currently in a rebuilding mode in hope that they can revive the dynasty they once had.
