California State University

California is home to the largest and most diverse, not to mention, the most affordable university in the country. With 23 campuses which house over 405,000 students and about 44,000 faculty and staff, the California State University provides quality education that focuses on the student’s best development while playing an important role in the growth and development of California’s economy.

The University recognizes the primacy of quality in instruction, and it achieves this purpose by maintaining a distinguished faculty. It provides a comprehensive educational program called the “General Education-Breadth Requirements”, required for all students regardless of bachelor’s degree or major field. This program ensures that its graduates have a holistic approach to education, making sure that all bases of basic education are covered, filled in, and well-learned.

In the early days of education in California, individual colleges existed independently of each other. However, because of the Donahoe Higher Education Act of 1960, the individual California State Colleges were brought together. In 1982, the system became known as the California State University System that we know of today. In the years that followed, the educational system grew consistently, and now has expanded to comprehensive and polytechnic universities as well as a nursing school, and even offers highly specialized courses such as a maritime academy. The system also provides students with the opportunity to get educated via distance courses, also known as technologically delivered programs through its Extended or Continuing Education Office.

The CSU works closely together with the California Academic Partnership Program (CAPP), which awards grants to partnerships between California higher education institutions as well as public schools. The partnership was fostered to improve the existing academic programs to better equip the students in meeting the requirements of today’s demanding work system.

The California State University offers more than 1,800 bachelor’s degree programs as well as master’s degree programs on over 240 subject areas. Most of the programs, if not all of them, are arranged in such a way that it can accommodate schedules that is kept busy by part-time or full-time employment. As such, afternoon sessions as well as sessions that begin in the early evening are available to students with busy schedules. CSU offers doctoral degrees jointly with the University of California, and also works together with private institutions in California in order to provide the most all-inclusive educational program. As of 2005, the CSU has been authorized to independently offer Doctor of Education Degree programs for educational administrators.

The University System also offers outreach programs that facilitate towards bringing university talents outside of its confines to better deserving communities outside the California educational system. It also provides various support systems as well as scholarship programs to deserving students.

To date, the California State University has awarded more than 2 million bachelor’s degrees, master degrees, and joint doctoral degrees since 1961. And with the development brought about by the system’s commitment to continued improvement, more people can now avail of the same quality education from the institution that has stood the test of time.
